Reducing waste in our stores
Over the past six years, we have implemented waste diversion initiatives to bring the
diversion rate across our store and gas bar operations to 76%. This was made possible by
our consistent service and operational optimization efforts, as well as our continued
commitment to finding solutions for hard-to-recycle materials.
For instance, in 2022, we found an innovative solution for flexible plastics. One of the most
prevalent materials in our stores’ waste streams is flexible plastic films such as pallet wrap
and poly bag packaging for clothing and other goods. These are rarely recycled in Canada,
and our national waste service provider was not able to recycle these materials at most of
our locations.
Determined to find a solution, we partnered with EFS-plastics, which could recycle the
material. After several pilots, we launched the program nationally across various SportChek,
Mark’s and PartSource stores, resulting in over 110,000 lbs of flexible plastics being
diverted from landfill in 2022.
